Black History in Canada: 4 New Historic Designations
August 23, 2020

Canada has a diverse history, however, the stories of the past have not always been highlighted in our historical national monuments. Today on International Day for the Remembrance of the Slave Trade and its Abolition I would like to share the upcoming four new historic designations that will highlight Canada's Black history.

In August, the National Program of Historical Commemoration announced four new historic designations. The four new historical designations will recognize the experiences of Black Canadians and highlight the systemic barriers Black Canadians have endured for 400 years. The four new historical designations aim to share the stories and recognize the historic significance of incredible Black Canadians who fought for freedom, justice and equality.  These events and people will help us reflect on how to build a more inclusive society for today and future generations.

The four monuments include:

  1. The Enslavement of African People in Canada (c.1629–1834)
  2. The West Indian Domestic Scheme, 1955–1967
  3. Larry Gains (1900–1983)
  4. Richard Pierpoint (c. 1744–c. 1838)

The practice of commemoration is about remembering our history and committing to do better in the future. By announcing these national historic designations, we hope to build an inclusive society to reflect the lived experiences of Black Canadians.
