Sunday, August 9th marks International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples. On this day, people from around the world are encouraged to spread the United Nation’s message on the protection and promotion of the rights of Indigenous peoples. In Canada, we are working in partnership with First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples to advance their visions of self-determination. We are advancing reconciliation and the affirmation of Indigenous rights through our work on the Indigenous Languages Act, reforms to child and family services and working together to implement the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. This year’s theme is COVID-19 and Indigenous peoples’ resilience.
Sunday, August 9th also marks marks National Peacekeeper’s Day. This is an opportunity for all Canadians to express the pride and respect they have towards personnel of the Canadian Armed Forces and Canadian diplomats and civilians who have worked in support of international peace and security operations. Canada has helped provide instrumental support to restore peace and security in areas devastated by conflict. Our peacekeepers play a vital and significant role in achieving these objectives while demonstrating compassion and courage. By marking this day, we can celebrate and express our gratitude to these men and women.
