We extend our deepest sympathies and condolences to the people of Beirut. To help with the recovery effort, we are sending humanitarian assistance to Lebanon that will support survivors and families. Canada is providing up to $5 million dollars in humanitarian assistance in response to the tragic explosion that occurred in Beirut, Lebanon on August 4, 2020. As highlighted by Minister Francois-Philippe Champagne and Minister Karina Gould the funding will go directly to the Beirut Red Cross via the Canadian Red Cross in their efforts to help those in need dire need. The thoughts of all Canadians are with the people of Lebanon during this extremely difficult rime.

Task Force on Lebanon
Canada is setting up a task force on Lebanon to support the delivery of consular services, and to ensure that questions related to immigration can be quickly addressed. We are also waiving fees for Lebanese citizens temporarily in Canada who require new documents to extend their stay as well as for Canadians and Canadian permanent residents who want to come home to Canada. On August 27th, Minister Champagne announced that our government is matching the full $8 million in donations from generous Canadians made through the Lebanese Matching Fund. Global Affairs Canada will transfer the funds to the Humanitarian Coalition, which will then distribute them to its members. This funding will help supply the Lebanese people with essential food, water, health and other critical humanitarian needs.
