Canada's Response to US tariffs on Canadian Aluminum
August 7, 2020

On Friday August 7, 2020, Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland responded to the United State’s decision to impose tariffs on Canadian aluminum. The announcement by the United States to impose tariffs on Canadian aluminum products was unwarranted and unacceptable. In the time of a global pandemic and an economic crisis, the last thing Canadian and American workers need is new tariffs that will raise costs for manufacturers and consumers, impede the free flow of trade, and hurt provincial and state economies. In response to the American tariffs, Canada intends to swiftly impose dollar-for-dollar countermeasures.

The Government of Canada has launched consultation on a broad and extensive list of US aluminum-containing products. I invite all Canadians and Canadian businesses to participate in these consultations over the next 30 days after which Canada will impose retaliatory tariffs.

Further information on Canada’s countermeasures will be announced shortly.

Please read the Deputy Minister's statement.

In August, Minister Melanie Joly announced close to $5 million dollars for the traceability of Canadian aluminum. This will help businesses in the aluminum industry to grow and create jobs. For more information click here.

On September 15th 2020, the United States of America decided to drop tariffs on Canadian aluminium. Team Canada has once again prevailed by sticking together and holding firm to support the Canadian aluminium industry and workers.
