Today marks the Dragon Boat Festival, also known as the Duanwu Festival - a traditional and important celebration in China. The festival originated in China to pray for good health and later evolved to commemorate the historical figure Qu Yuan for his patriotism, commitment and dedication to work.
In Canada, the festival is usually celebrated through dragon boat races and eating Zongzi, a form of rice dumplings covered by bamboo leaves. While events and dragon boat races are cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this is an opportunity to celebrate the rich history of Chinese Canadians who continue to enrich and make our country the diverse and inclusive society it is today.
