Canada Day Celebrations!
June 16, 2020
Canada Day is a one of a kind event that brings together Canadians across the whole country. This is why, in light of the current and ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and the government’s priority of keeping Canadians safe, Canadian Heritage has decided to host Canada Day online in a way that will bring all Canadians together and allow them to express their national pride in a virtual environment.

At a time like this, it is important now, more than ever, that we come together from coast to coast to coast to celebrate our history and culture.

Canada Day is a great opportunity to unite Canadians as a people, and to highlight a nation that promotes diversity and inclusion.

All Canadians are invited to join us for the day, and we have many options for them to do so, be it by going to our website, joining us on our social media platforms such as our Facebook and Twitter accounts, to name a few. At 1 p.m. ET (2 p.m. AT / 10 a.m. PT) we will feature the daytime show, Canada Day Across the Country, and at 8 p.m. local time we celebrate with the evening show, Canada Day Together, both of which will be broadcast on CBC and Radio-Canada and streamed on our social media sites.

We will also be commemorating the 40th anniversary of the official adoption of our national anthem, “O Canada”.

On July 1st, Elections Canada will be celebrating their 100th Anniversary!

Created by an act of Parliament in 1920, the Office of the Chief Electoral Officer (Elections Canada) was one of the world’s first independent electoral agencies. Previously, national elections were managed by officials relying on provincial voters lists and with eligibility also determined by the provinces. A special parliamentary committee studied electoral systems used in other countries and decided to recommend a new approach—one not used anywhere else in the world. The proposal was vigorously debated, but there was broad political agreement when the House of Commons passed the Dominion Elections Act. Parliament’s decision to create a non-partisan election office independent of any government or political party made Canada a global pioneer, and it remains a defining moment in the story of our democracy.
